A common problem after whiplash injury is that the normal curve in the neck flattens out. The reason you may have pain is that your neck can't bend into a normal curve with extension of the neck. When people bring their head back, the curve in the neck increases to compensate. However, in many whiplash patients, the neck stays straight. Remember how and where your neck hurt and try this exercise...
Start by standing and using a bath towel to support your neck as shown. Pull on the towel so that your neck feels supported.
Next, start moving your head back while pulling on the towel. Try different positions with the towel and pull strengths. You should be able to do this so that your neck is almost pain-free with this movement. Keep your neck supported by the towel at all times. If the towel helps, try this exercise for 5 minutes twice a day working up to 10 minutes twice a day. It will help restore the normal curve in your neck by allowing you to strengthen the little muscles in the back of your neck that hold the curve. Tips:
